Uganda's coach Benjamin Longiros has said Joshua Cheptegei was unlucky to pick up a muscle cramp during the men's senior race at the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championship on Sunday.

Cheered on by the home crowd at the Kololo Independence ground including President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and his wife Janet Kataaha Museveni, the star runner dominated most of the race, but was unlucky to slow down with a muscle cramp.

It was Kenya's Geoffrey Kamworor who came speeding to win the race and retain his gold medal he won in China at the previous Championship.

During an interview at Africana Hotel on Monday afternoon, Longiros told URN that it was unfortunate that Cheptegei got a problem. “He was even running at a slow pace than he normally does during training. But these kind of muscle cramps can happen to any athlete,” added the coach.

He however said he was happy that winning one gold medal and two team bronze medals was the best ever performance by a Uganda team at a World Cross Country Championship. He said this kind of performance will motivate them to train the team even harder for better results.

Youngster Jacob Kiplimo won Uganda a gold medal in the U-20 men's race. Uganda also won two team bronze medals to finish third in the overall table standing behind Ethiopia and champions Kenya.

Dominic Otuchet, the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) President said he was excited about the performance. He said although Uganda was unlucky to have Cheptegei get injured with a muscle problem, it was the best performance ever.

“We hosted a good Championship and also performed well enough in the presence of the President Museveni who gave the team lots of motivational support,” he added.
