Uganda’s long-distance sensational, Joshua Cheptegei will launch his 2022 season with the 10km road run in Cannes, France. The race is scheduled to take place on March 6, 2022. It will be part of the Cannes half-marathon.

The Olympics gold medalist will be returning on road after spending almost three years without taking part in any road race.  “I am happy to return to the French Riviera to start off my 2022 season. It's been two and a half years since the last time I run 10km on the road so will be exciting to see where I am at the moment”. Cheptegei briefly posted on his Twitter handle.

Cheptegei last took part in a road race in 2019 when he smashed the world record in the 10km race after crossing the finishing line in 26 minutes and 38 seconds at the 10K Valencia Trinidad Alfonso.  His world record did not last long.

Six weeks later, Kenya’s Rhonex Kipruto smashed the record when he posted 26 minutes, 24 seconds in Valencia. He lowered Cheptegei’s world record by 14 seconds, making Cheptegei the second-fastest man in the world over the 10km road race.

Cheptegei will use the road race to help him shape up as the 2022 commonwealth games’ preparations intensify. This will be his first race in 2022. Previously, the Uganda Athletics Federation organization the National cross country championship but the 25-years did not participate.

Paul Longoni, the President of AC Cannes applauded Cheptegei's involvement in the race. “It's a huge honour to welcome Joshua Cheptegei, a talented athlete, to our event and he has chosen our 10K for his next race. It is, of course, an additional pressure for the organization to have an athlete who has already broken the world record at the start because the race settings must be perfect, and everything will be done to achieve this," Longoni noted.

Adding that “Our flat course is a great place to perform, and all the runners will be able to admire Joshua's stride. This is a unique gift for the participants of the "Semi de Cannes", who will enjoy meeting an exceptional athlete on the course, and will cheer him on to world-class performance.”
