Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei was in good form to win the 2018 Cross Internacional de Itálica (11.1km) in Santiponce on the outskirts of the Spanish city of Seville on Sunday.

The World 10,000m silver medalist Joshua Cheptegei recorded a time of 30.54 to beat fellow countryman Jacob Kiplimo by one second.

“This is very good for our athletes because it shows that they are starting the season on a high. Our target as Uganda is to win as many medals as possible during the Commonwealth Games in Australia in April,” a Dominic Otuchet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) told URN on Monday.

Uganda's third runner Joel Ayeko finished in eight place, while the 2017 champion Selemon Barega from Ethiopia settled for third place with a time of 31:01.

Otuchet said that although some runners have been entered in different championships in Europe, the local calendar is busy with national trials which are also being used as qualifiers for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Kenya's Agnes Tirop won the women's race (8.2km), while Lilian Rengeruk also from Kenya came second.
