Cheptegei's Gold Medal Win Excites Residents in Kapchorwa

Residents in Kapchorwa are celebrating the gold medal win by one of their sons Joshua Cheptegei on Sunday night in Doha.

Cheptegei put up a good performance in the 10,000m final to win Uganda's second gold medal at the IAAF World Athletics Championship that climaxed last night.

He set the best time in the season 26:48.36 to beat Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha and Kenya’s Rhonex Kipruto to second and third place respectively.

On Sunday by 7pm all social places had been filled to capacity waiting to see Cheptegei compete in the 10,000m final. At Glorious church ministries which was filled to capacity, prayers were conducted for Cheptegei.   

“By 8pm we dedicated the young man to God, and in the middle of the race the pace was promising and this gave us hope. After Cheptegei won the race we couldn't believe our eyes," said one of the residents at Noah’s ark Hotel Kapchorwa.          

Peter Chelengant, coach for the Roza camp said Cheptegei has kept Uganda’s flag high and for Kapchorwa as well. “Cheptegei has done us proud as people of Kapchorwa but it’s now time for the Government to fully support the sporting activities in the country,” he added.

Cheptegei's neighbor, Erisa Cheptoek said that the gold medal winner has excited the the whole village and neighbors who spent the whole night rejoicing.    

Poster Henry Swilkey from Glorious church ministries said they spent a whole day praying for the star runner and that they expect more from the young athlete.    

Benjamin Njia, one of the national coaches wants the government to expedite the construction of the Tereyet National Training Center to help the athletes in the training.    

Musau Alfred Tunde, the Kapchorwa District Sports Administrator said Cheptegei’s gold medal win will inspire the young athletes.
