Uganda's Stella Chesang on Sunday finished third in the FBK Games Hengelo in a 5000m race to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Chesang registered a time of 15:10:30 in Netherlands behind Ethiopia's Gidey Letesenbet and Irene Cheptai (Kenya) who finished first and second respectively.

“We are very happy that Chesang has also made it and becomes the 14th athlete to qualify for the Olympics. She also managed to beat her personal best time of 15:25:01,” Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) President, Dominic Otuchet told URN on Monday.

Otuchet said that they will keep focused on getting 18 athletes to qualify for the Olympics in Brazil. “We need to improve our chances of winning more medals by have several athletes at the Games,” he added.

Uganda has now qualified 14 athletes and two boxers for the Summer Olympic Games that run August 7-21 in Rio de Jeneiro. The 2016 Summer Olympic program features a total of 41 disciplines.

Team Uganda will be led by 2012 Marathon gold medalist Stephen Kiprotich, Solomon Mutai, together with boxers Ronald Serugo and  Kenneth Katende among others.
