Long-distance runner Stella Chesang concluded Uganda's participation at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with an 8th-place finish in the women's marathon on Sunday. The 2018 Commonwealth Games 10,000m gold medalist completed the challenging race in 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 1 second.

The women’s 42.195km marathon, which was the final event of the Olympic athletics program, saw the Netherlands' Sifan Hassan secure the gold medal with a time of 2:22:55. Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa and Kenya’s Hellen Obiri claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Chesang’s fellow Ugandan athletes, Rebecca Cheptegei and Mercyline Chelangat, finished 44th and 69th, with times of 2:32:14 and 2:39:40. The trio represented Uganda’s final hopes at this year’s edition of the Olympic Games. The athletes had arrived in Paris on Wednesday, participating only in the women's marathon to avoid the prolonged exposure to Paris's humid conditions before their race.

With Chesang’s race marking the end of Uganda's journey in Paris, the country concluded the Olympics with two medals: Joshua Cheptegei’s gold in the 10,000m and Peruth Chemutai’s silver in the 3,000m steeplechase.

This performance reflects a dip from Uganda's showing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where the country secured four medals, including two golds—Cheptegei in the men’s 5,000m and Chemutai in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase—along with a silver and a bronze in the men’s 10,000m by Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo, respectively.

Meanwhile, URN has learned that at least four athletes, including Jacob Kiplimo, Peruth Chemutai, and Halima Nakaayi, have already left the Olympic Village to prepare for upcoming events, while swimmer Gloria Muzito has returned to Sweden to reunite with her family.
