A teenage mother in Kotido district has delivered a baby with exposed intestines. The child was delivered at Lokiding health center II in Longaroe Sub County on Sunday.

The teenager’s mother, Madelena Lomoe, says she was shocked by the condition of her grandchild. She says the 19-year-old was abandoned by her husband after getting another wife in Karenga.

Dr. Eric Alilo, the in-charge of Kotido Health Centre IV described the condition as gastroschisis, a birth defect of the abdominal wall where the baby’s intestines stick outside of the body through a hole beside the belly button.

He says the child has been referred to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for further management because Kotido lacks specialized equipment and a doctor to handle such cases.

Dr. Alilo also reveals that they received another child from the same area about three weeks ago with an abnormal growth on the face.

He called on partners and well-wishers to support the mother while at the hospital and back home.

Reports indicate that a similar case was registered in the same area three years ago and was also referred to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for better management.
