Children Missing as Kapelebyong Parents Flee Homes

Several children are missing following the clash between joint security forces and armed Karimojong warriors in Kapelebyong district on Tuesday. 

Most of the missing children were at the school when the clashes started and took off to unknown places. Francis Akorikin, the LC V Chairperson of Kapelebyong district, says that about 20 children missing. 

He says that some children failed to locate their parents because of the gunfire exchange that forced them to scatter to different places.

Virgilian Ongaria, a mother of eight, says that her two children didn't return home and are still missing. Ongaria, who slept in Acumet Church, says that she was in the trading centre when people started fleeing from their homes.

Some of the children including those with the hearing and sight impairments were found at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Acumet when their parents failed to locate them.

Richard Alioka, a seminarian found in the church, says that after screening, they realized that some of the children had no parents.

The Kapelebyong District Education Officer, Samson Okare Olaki says some schools like Apopong have been forced to close prematurely as children and teachers flee for their dear lives. Okare says that the district is still collecting data on the impact of the insecurity on education in the district.
