Children Petition Leaders to Protect their Rights and Safety

Rampant sexual abuse that has been othering leaders, security personnel and aid workers in Buikwe district turns out to also have been a major concern to the children awho are the the victims. 

The children's representatives in the district have now petitioned their local leaders to cause the enactment of laws that can protect their rights to ensure their safe stay in their societies.

According to the children who presented their petition at the World Vision office in Buikwe on Monday, they are often married off by their parents at a tender age, kidnapped or defiled by people in their communities.

Frahuma Nakamya says that as children they faced with a lot of challenges starting with being set off for marriage at a tender age, child sacrifice, child labour among others.

Naume Nabwetemye says that often times they are not heard even when sharing important information. “Sometimes you may try to tell your parents or guardians something that might have happened to you during the day while they were away and they will not believe you, or sometimes they will send you away to another relative and still the same issue might happen to you over there as well.”

Meanwhile Mercy Nakimuli accuses police of working with the culprits to destroy the case file which has only fueled high rates of children abuse’s rights in the district.

According to the Pascal Freeman, Programs Director World Vision in Buikwe district, One in four girls is married off before her 18th birthday.

He notes that in a research they conducted in government health facilities within the district, they discovered that a total of 2830 girls between 10 to 19 had already conceived.

The 10th parliament of Uganda passed two bills earlier this year, namely; the Prevention and Prohibition of Human Sacrifice Billwhich passed on May 4, 2021, and Sexual Offences Bill 2019 passed on May 3, 2021, which criminalises marriages involving children and other sexual offences against children like child pornography, defilement, sexual abuse in schools, and child sex tourism among others.

The Buikwe Woman MP Diana Mutasingwa, condemns Buikwe parents for giving out their children into marriages for material benefits. She notes that there is a need for them as leaders to meet and sensitize the parents and children against acts of early teenage pregnancies.
