Farmers engaged in citrus fruit farming in Kitgum district are losing their plants to worms and harsh weather.

Joel Ojok, a resident of Ibakara parish in Kitgum Matidi, says he planted twenty grafted oranges last year but has only ten remaining. According to Ojok the leaves of his orange plants develop spots and they fall off.

Mercy Auma, a beneficiary of the NAADS program in Akwang Sub-county says her plantations have been affected by worms that eat up the leaves and leaving dried up plants.

Auma says she has lost 70 out the one 100 seedlings she planted last year. She fears that with the insufficient rains, her citrus might all dry up.

Peter Abal, the agricultural officer, says there are cases of elegant grasshoppers and leaf miner that eats up the leaf epidermis, leaving the leaves dry and eventually fall off.

Abal says the problem is being aggravated by the hot weather that leaves the diseased plants weaker.

According to Abal most farmers were given incomplete packages and inadequate technology during the distribution of the citrus seedlings.

He says most farmers were also not trained on planting and disease control measures and they find it hard to control simple disease attacks.

Abal however says his office has come up with write ups to illustrate how to plant and manage their plants.
