Entebbe Chief Magistrate Mary Babirye has granted bail to city socialite Nasser Nduhukire, after a month in detention on charges of fraud and obtaining money by false pretense.

Nduhukire was charged after defrauding USD 4.3 million from Johnny Hill, a 56-year old American national of promising to sell to him 75 kilograms of gold. He also conspired to steal USD 4.7 million from a Russian National for the same amount of gold.

It is still not clear how the deals were struck. However, videos that recently circulated on social media show Johnny Hill alongside Uganda police and Interpol surrounding a home where Nduhukire was picked from a ceiling. By the time of the arrest, more than three people had come up claiming that they had been conned by the self-proclaimed tycoon.

Today, Nduhukire applied for bail, on ground that bail is a right granted to him by the constitution.  Defense counsel Robert Friday Kagoro presented five sureties including Tumusiime Kamukama, an official at the ministry of Agriculture, Mutugirehi Ramadhan, a staff at the National Drug Authority, Matsiko Musini, Kyaruzi Nadhiry and Kekimuli Shamila.

Whereas prosecution led by Joan Keko, objected the application for bail on grounds that the suspect was young, connected and likely to tamper with investigations, the magistrate concurred with prosecution that bail is a constitutional right and that prosecution didn't provide evidence that the suspect has tampered with investigations.

Babirye later granted bail to Nduhukire on condition that deposits 50 million Shillings, a land title and his passport. All sureties were accepted by the magistrate on a non-cash bail of 100 million Shillings each.

Kagoro welcomed the court decision.

The Chief Magistrate set January 16, 2019 as the hearing date for the two cases against the suspect.

Nduhukire stunned Ugandans two months ago when he imported a brand new Rolls Royce 2017 edition worth 1.1 billion Shillings.
