One civilian was on Sunday shot dead and another injured during a shoot-out between the army and the local defence unit personnel in Amudat district.

The incident happened some 100 kilometres South East of Moroto town.

The dead has been identified as Lochon Alukak, a peasant farmer hailing from Nagoliet village, Looro Sub County in Amudat district. The injured, Lokunoi Nanyiman is also a resident of the same area.

A source from the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) who did not want to be on record due to the sensitivity of the matter, told URN that the LDU men were herding animals together with civilians before the army intercepted them in the bush. He explains that when they tried to stop the group at a distance they took to their heels. This prompted the army to chase them into the jungles where they met face to face and fought for over 20 minutes.

The source says the UPDF overpowered the LDU fighters and in the process stray bullets hit the civilians.

Lt. Jimmy Omara, the UPDF 3rd Division Spokesperson could neither deny nor confirm when contacted. He admits that there was a fight that ended with death without disclosing details. He however adds that the army managed to intercept the suspected rustled animals from Moroto district.

Omara says fleeing from the UPDF was the sole cause of the clash. He notes that a team has been selected to establish reasons as to why the two forces clashed adding that the UPDF is also seeking to ascertain the source of the animals kept at undisclosed place. He appeals to the public to cooperate with the investigators into the fire exchange.

Okot Obwona, the Regional Police Commander Mt. Moroto Area, said on Monday the case had not been reported. He however, admits having heard the clash in what he called rumours.
