Uganda Cranes interim coach Moses Basena has said he is optimistic the national team can still qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The Cranes put up a spirited fight last night but suffered a 1-0 defeat to hosts Egypt in a Group E game played at the Borg El-Arab Stadium in Alexandria. Liverpool player Muhammed Salah netted the goal on six minutes.

But although the seven-time African champions Egypt reclaimed their top spot in the group with nine points, while Uganda are second on seven points, Basena thinks the battle is not over yet.

“We need to keep focused and positive because we still have a chance to make it to the World Cup. We need to win our remaining two games and hope that Egypt also falter,” said Basena in Alexandria.

The coach who took over after Milutin ‘Micho' Sredojevic terminated his contract early last month said that he will hope all the national team players keep active with their respective clubs ahead of the home game against Ghana in October.

Ghana lies third on the table with five points after beating hosts Congo Brazzaville 5-1 in the earlier group game on Tuesday.

Skipper Denis Onyango who kept Uganda in the game with several good saves said the team should keep focused. “Hard fought game from the boys but one moment decided the game. Let us stay focused and face the next challenge,” said the reigning African player of the year (Africa based).

For Uganda Cranes to qualify they will need to beat Ghana at home and Congo Brazzaville away and hope that Egypt can suffer defeat away to the Black Stars of Ghana.

Besides getting the top level exposure, qualification for the World Cup tournament in Russia would see the Uganda Cranes pocket over 10 billion shillings that is given to all the teams that qualify.
