The Natural Resources Committee of Parliament has this afternoon directed Aqua World Limited to immediately halt its sand mining activities in Kamalira Village, Nkozi Sub-county, Mpigi district.

Aqua World Uganda Limited, a company belonging to Pastor Samuel Kakande of Synagogue Church of All Nations, has been in the news for reportedly mining sand illegally.

This follows last month's committee on-site visits to Lwera, Mpigi district to investigate reports of mass sand mining. The committee discovered that Aqua World had been illegally mining sand in the area.

The committee discovered that the company was breaching the terms of its permit from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) and was carrying out mining activities within the 200 metres restricted zone from the shoreline in Lwera wetland.

Legislators also found that Aqua World, which was initially granted a cage fish farming permit in 2014, is also using the area to grow rice.

The company's legal representative Bernard Mutyaba appeared before the committee today.

Mutyaba came to clarify on several issues that legislators found pressing including compliance certificates from NEMA and the annual environmental audits of the fish farming activities.

He admitted that Aqua World had made a lot of mistakes and that they are willing to put things right.

Committee chairperson Alex Byarugaba said the ban placed by his committee is tentative until the committee finalises its report.
