The five athletes who won medals at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games have received a total cash prize of 100 million shillings from the National Council of Sports NCS.

The five athletes who won medals at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games have received a total cash prize of 100 million shillings from the National Council of Sports (NCS).
Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei won two gold medals in the 5,000m and 10,000m races, while Stella Chesang bagged a gold medal in the women's 10,000m at the Games. The other athletes Solomon Munyo Mutai won silver in marathon, while Mercyline Chelangat picked a bronze medal in the 10,000m women race and boxer Juma Miiro picked bronze in the 46-49kg weight category.
Cheptegei who is out injured received 50 million Uganda shillings at a function that took place on Tuesday at the NCS headquarters in Lugogo. Chesang received 20 million Uganda shillings, while Mutai picked 15 million Uganda shillings and the two bronze medalists Chelangat and Miiro 7.5 Uganda million shillings each.
“ I am happy that we have been rewarded for winning medals at the Commonwealth Games. This will encourage us to work harder,” said Cheptegei at the function.
Bosco Onyik, Chairman of the NCS Board thanked the athletes for lifting Uganda's flag high at the Commonwealth Games. “ Through the National Organising Committee we promised our athletes who win this country medals to be rewarded. We have lived by our word by offering this cash prize today,”added Onyik.
Uganda finished in 15th place out of 71st Commonwealth countries that competed at the Games. Uganda participated in 11 sporting disciplines; Athletics, Boxing, Cycling, Netball, Badminton, Rugby, Squash, Swimming, Weightlifting, Table Tennis and shooting.
