Two Congolese nationals have been arrested in Fort Portal with fifteen tones of immature fish.

Katali Ntakubisoga and Manega Nzimana were arrested Thursday afternoon at Kaswa along Fort Portal-Kyenjojo highway.

The immature fish worth 30 million shillings was impounded from a truck of registration number UAJ 5948.

Cobb Mpanga, the Law Enforcement Officer in the Ministry of Fisheries, says that the suspects were smuggling the immature fish to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Mpanga says that the impounded fish which included Tilapia and Nile Perch will be auctioned to the public.

Mpanga says that the suspects did not have a Movement permit authorizing them to transport fish.

William Sabitti, the District Fisheries Officer Kabarole, says that fish smugglers use the Fort Portal-Kyenjojo highway because of lack of security checks on the road.

Ntakubisoga and Nzimana appeared this afternoon before the Chief Magistrate Fort Portal, Boniface Wamala and were remanded to Katojo Prison.

Under section 27 of the Fisheries and Crocodile Act, it is illegal to sell or be in possession of immature fish. The punishment is two years imprisonment, a fine of 10,000 shillings or both.
