The construction of the UGX 470 billion Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira City has reached 10 percent completion, just six months after the physical works officially commenced in January this year.
The Government handed over the site in December 2024 to SAMCO National Construction Company, an Egyptian firm, following the signing of the contract at State House, Nakasero on December 6, 2024.
Named after John Akii-Bua, Uganda’s legendary Olympic gold medalist, the stadium is one of the facilities earmarked to host matches during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Uganda will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania.

Sarah Ajok, the project’s technical engineer, revealed that there are ongoing plans to introduce day and night shifts to ensure the timely delivery of the stadium, which is expected to be completed within 20 months.
Currently, there are 300 workers on-site, with 23 percent being women. Ajok said the team is targeting 30 percent female participation on the project.

The Akii-Bua Stadium will comprise a 20,000-seat main stadium with an eight-lane track, a 2,000-seat indoor multi-sport arena, and a 25-meter semi-Olympic swimming pool. It will also feature outdoor courts for basketball, netball, volleyball, and badminton, as well as a 1,000-vehicle parking facility.
Additional components include five sports pitches, a fully furnished clubhouse for stadium operations, and a 60-room hostel to accommodate athletes and staff. Once completed, the Akii-Bua Stadium is expected to become a regional sports hub and a major contributor to Uganda’s sports infrastructure, particularly in preparation for the 2027 AFCON tournament.
