The Construction of first Muslim secondary school in Nakasongola district has resumed, a year after work stalled following a court suit.

Construction of Nakasongola Muslim community secondary School in Nakasongola town council started in 2010, but two tenants rushed to Nakasongola chief magistrates court and sought a court injunction claiming to be the rightful owners of the seven acres of land on which the school was being built.

Mary Achieng and Labson Odong, claimed that they settled on the disputed piece of land in 1945 and invested heavily through farming. The two families demanded 2 billion shillings as compensation, before being evicted from the land to pave way for construction of the school.

But the board of trustees of Nakasongola community school headed by Sheikh Yahaya Ssebirumbi and the district education department rejected the demand accusing the tenants of unlawfully settling on the land and asking for unjustifiable funds.

Ssebirumbi, argued that the landlord of the land Musa Nkuubi donated it to the muslims to built the school for the community and they had no money for compensation. The construction stopped and the site was turned into grazing ground for cows and goats.

In December, 2010, the two tenants represented by Kasana,Mpungu and company advocates  resolved to withdraw the case with no terms and asked Nakasongola district to proceed with the construction of the school.

The Muslims petitioned President Yoweri Museveni demanding for the construction of Muslim secondary school to offer both religious and secular studies to the students.

President Museveni pledged 354 million to the project and the money were disbursed through school facilitation grant programme to the district education department.

The Nakasongola Chief Administrative officer Suleiman Kasozi expressed worry that the money that was budgeted for the school are not enough due to hiking of the building materials.

He added that the school construction was supposed to be complete in June, 2012.
