Construction of a hostel building at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital has kicked off.

The 7.8 billion Shillings hostel will be constructed at Makanga hill near the hospital in Kabale Municipality. It is funded by the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Health and constructed by Musuuza Building Contractors Limited.

Julius Byaruhanga, the head of Procurement at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital says the facility, expected to address accommodation challenges for health workers and interns, will have among others, apartments, a recreational centre, a multi-purpose centre and a grocery centre. It will be completed within a period of five years.

Kabale Hospital Director Alex Andema says that today, only 30 out of 250 employees are accommodated.  The rest stay in their homes, some miles away from the hospital while others rent in Kabale town. Andema says that it is very difficult for health workers to respond to emergencies especially at night under the current arrangement.
