Construction of the nine billion Shillings bridge over River Mpanga in Kamwenge district has stalled.

In 2018, Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA contracted Armpass Technical Services to construct the bridge, which is expected to connect Kamwenge town council to Kabambiro Sub County. But actual work started in June last year and was expected to be completed at the end of this financial year.

The company was supposed to construct a dual carriageway bridge, a walkway for pedestrians, one-Kilometer tarmac road stretch and another one-kilometre first-class murram road.

However, the relocation of utility lines like water pipes and power lines, have stalled the project for about three months now.

William Sharpe Tumwiine, the UNRA Project Manager, says although the relocation of water pipes is supposed to be done by Armpass Technical Services, NWSC is demanding Shillings 24 million as supervision fees.

Engineer Cuthbert Abigaba Mirembe, the Kibale County Member of Parliament, says there are also demands for compensation since the project is going to affect people’s property.

Currently, people are still using the old bridge, which is in a very poor state.
