Yanjian Company Limited has started reworking some parts of Nakaseke Hospital following complaints from the administrators and Members of Parliament over shoddy works.

Early last year, Yanjian Company Limited handed over Nakaseke hospital to management after completing renovation works. However, a year after the renovations, complaints of shoddy work emerged from the hospital administrators and Members of Parliament on the Government Assurance and Implementation Committee.

Bernard Okongo, the Nakaseke Hospital Medical Superintendent listed the key defects as peeling of iron sheets, cracks on the floor and ceilings as well as the weak solar power system that was installed to pump water at the facility.

The defects developed and widened before the expiry of the liability period but the contractor didn't correct them. Last week, legislators on the Government Assurance and Implementation Committee ordered the contractor to redo the works or they ask the Health Ministry to recover some money from them.

Kenneth Odongkara, the Yanjian Company Site Engineer, blames part of the defects on substandard materials, they got from their suppliers. He says the suppliers had agreed to replace the iron sheets since they brought the matter to the attention of Uganda National Bureau of Standards, which approved them for construction.

Odongkara says they are now back at the site and hope they will complete the works within the next two weeks.

The renovation of Nakaseke hospital came 27 years after it was vandalized by National Resistance Army- NRA fighters between 1981-1986. Government spent over Shillings 13 billion on the renovation works and equipping the hospital after acquiring a loan from World Bank.

The renovations enabled Nakaseke Hospital to create several service points to increase efficiency. Some of the service points created include immunization, diabetes, four laboratories, HIV/AIDS, Outpatient units, maternal and private wards among others.
