Kamuli District Councillor Noet Nangobi has been nominated to contest in the NRM party primaries for the Kamuli District Woman Member of Parliament seat.

Nangobi will face off against First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, who has represented Kamuli in Parliament since 1989. Kadaga previously served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament for ten years and later as Speaker for another decade until 2021, when she was defeated by Bukedea Woman MP Anita Annet Among.

Speaking shortly after her nomination by Dr. Tanga Odoi, the NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, Nangobi highlighted several pressing issues facing Kamuli District, including high rates of teenage pregnancy, early marriages, and domestic violence.

"Women are now cutting the private parts of men. These are signs of a community in distress. We need to intensify sensitisation, which I intend to do through a door-to-door campaign," Nangobi said.

“She first came to be sworn in, then returned to contest for Speaker, then came for the funeral of Jacob Oulanyah, and the last time was during the mourning of Cecilia Ogwal,” Nangobi alleged.

Nangobi accused Kadaga of neglecting her constituents and urged voters to choose a younger, more energetic leader who is regularly available.

Kadaga picked up nomination forms last week and has yet to return them to be duly nominated.

Several notable politicians have also been nominated under the NRM ticket for various parliamentary seats.

Specioza Mugisa Nyainabalongo has been nominated for the Kabarole District Woman MP seat. In Masaka, former Central Youth MP Sarah Kityo Babirye is now contesting for the Bukoto East Constituency. In Soroti, Soroti East MP Herbert Edmund Ariko has been nominated to contest for Gweri County, an area currently represented by FDC’s Tom Julius Ekudo. Ariko, who was elected in a hotly contested by-election on July 28, 2022, following the nullification of  FDC's Moses Attan’s victory, now seeks to represent Gweri in the next Parliament.

Sheikh Kassim Kamugisha, the former Deputy Resident District Commissioner, has been nominated to contest for the Kabale Municipality seat, aiming to unseat incumbent Dr. Nicholas Kamara. Kamugisha said he will promote the NRM ideology including patriotism, Pan-Africanism, socio-economic transformation, and democracy. He urged voters to reject identity-based politics, saying,  development doesn’t consider religion.

Also nominated is 27-year-old Hellen Auma Wandera, who wants to retain her Busia Parliamentary seat.  She is currently the youngest legislator in Parliament.

Jacklin Amongin, currently a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly, is vying for the Ngora District Woman MP seat. Amongin, a former MP, said she was the first legislator for Ngora District, but little progress has been made since she left. She now seeks a return to rekindle development in the area.

The nominations will end on June 30th, and primaries will be held on July 16th
