The High Court in Soroti has lifted an injunction halting the nomination of candidates in Soroti City.

Last week, the Assistant Soroti High Court Registrar, Godfrey Ssalaamu issued the injunction in response to an application by five people contesting the boundaries of Soroti city. They include Michael Enyagu Etadu, Robert Onanyang, Stephen Erienyu, Patrick Ejulu and Brian Omoding.

The group, in their main application, contested the alteration of boundaries in Soroti City as stated in the creating instruments of administrative units by Parliamentary.

In his ruling on the interim injunction on Thursday, Justice Wilson Masalu Musene said that since electoral activities are on-going, the nomination of candidates may continue provided that the Electoral Commission doesn't alter the boundaries. He also noted that the interim injunction on boundaries remains until the main application, its hearing scheduled for next week is disposed of.

Leonard Otee, the petitioners’ lawyer says that some people took advantage of the confusion over boundaries to alter some of the boundaries approved by Parliament for political gains. He explains that the boundary issue, if not handled well, might cause violence in Soroti.

However since Soroti City was inaugurated on August 10th, several people have continued to seek clarification from the Ministry of Local Government over the city boundaries.
