Court Martial Remands Court Bailiff Kirunda over Murder

Court heard that Kirunda and Kyatuuka -a UPDF officer who is attached to the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence -CMI and others still at large caused the unlawful death of Mugwanya on July 14th 2021 in Kitanzi Zone, Kampala District. Mugwanya who had parked his car on the roadside saw a woman crying for help as she was being dragged by three men into a waiting car at night. He got out to help and the accused persons shot him even after he identified himself.

Reknowned court bailiff Moses Kirunda has been charged afresh by the General Court Martial in Makindye on charges of murdering city businessman Magid Mugwanya.

Kirunda who allegedly demolished  St Peters Peters Church Ndeeba in 2020 first appeared before the Makindye Chief Magistrates Court last month over the said murder and he was remanded to Kitalya Government's prison.

On Monday the Director of Public Prosecutions Jane Frances Abodo withdrew the charges in the Magistrates Court to pave way for the Military Prosecutions to reinstate them before the General Court Martial.

As a result, Kirunda together with his co accused Major Nelson Kyatuuka has  appeared before Court presided over by Lt General Andrew Gutti who read to them one count of murder.

Court heard that Kirunda and Kyatuuka -a UPDF officer who is attached to the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence -CMI and others still at large caused the unlawful death of Mugwanya .

According to the Prosecution , the murder in question ocured on July 14th  2021 in Kitanzi Zone Lungujja in Lubaga Division in Kampala District. 

It is alleged that Mugwanya who had parked his car on the roadside saw a woman crying and seeking help as she was being dragged by three men into a waiting car at night.

Mugwanya reportedly got out of his car to help a woman but three armed men shot him in the chest even after he had identified himself. The records indicate that he then died on spot and the suspects fled the crime scene.

However,  the 57-year-old Kirunda and his co accused  have denied the charges and been sent back on remand at Kitalya Government's Prison until October 4th 2021 as investigations continue.

Kirunda who is alleged to have been hiding after the crime was picked up by detectives attached from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit from Lungujja in August before being produced to the Chief Magistrate's Court in Makindye.
