The Pallisa chief magistrate’s Court has rejected an application for a vote recount in the newly created Gogonyo County.  The application was filed by Issa Taligola Bantalib after losing the parliamentary race to his National Resistance Movement-NRM rival, Derrick Orone.

Taligola, who ran as an independent candidate polled 6214 votes against 6280 votes garnered by his rival. He rejected the poll results citing irregularities in the tallying process.

In his petition, Taligola alleged that there were several omissions during the vote counting and declaration of results by the Electoral Commission, which denied him victory.

However, in her ruling, the Pallisa Chief Magistrate, Zulaika Nanteza, says the petitioner had failed to provide evidence backing his case for a vote recount. She declared Orone as the dully elected Gogonyo County Member of Parliament.

Nanteza advised Taligola to appeal the judgment in high court if he is dissatisfied with the decision of the magistrate’s court. Taligola has described the court decision as unfair, saying the magistrate’s court didn’t evaluate the evidence of altered poll results presented by the Electoral Commission.

Derrick Orone, the Gogonyo MP elect welcomed the court decision, saying the elections were free and fair. He said the poll results represent the will of the people of Gogonyo.
