Court Rules Rev. Bakaluba Mukasa out of Parliament

Supporters of outspoken media personality, Betty Nambooze Bakireke, are still celebrating a High Court ruling made late yesterday that declared the election of her main political rival, Rev. Peter Bakaluba Mukasa, null and void.
Nambooze's supporters had to wait until about 8 p.m. on Friday to hear the ruling by Justice Stella Arach. Justice Arach said there was sufficient evidence to prove the disenfranchisement of voter in Mukono North Constituency during the February 2006 parliamentary elections. She noted that the names of more than 1,000 voters were arbitrarily removed from the voters register, affecting the outcome of the elections.
Justice Arach added that the petitioners had proved that Bakaluba bribed voters and had used underage unregistered teenagers to vote in his favor. She pointed out the example of the village of Naama to which the MP gave 100,000 shillings to buy saucepans that could be used at public functions. Also noted was the smuggling of 67 students of Greenville Secondary School to vote for Bakaluba at Takajunge police station.
However not everything went in Nambooze's favor. Her contention of voter intimidation and ballot stuffing were rejected by court.
