There were protests at Kasese Municipal Health Centre III in Kasese Town on Thursday by people seeking COVID-19 vaccination against the chronic absenteeism of health workers.

They accused medical workers of abandoning them and Kasese District Health Officer Yusuf Baseka for failing to rein in on negligent health workers involved in the COVID-19 vaccination exercise.

They now want the government to extend the vaccination to other lower local health facilities and introduce mobile vaccination facilities.

Kasese Resident District Commissioner, Joel Walusimbi told URN that he received a phone from concerned persons informing him that they had not been attended to by 9:00 am.

He rushed to the facility and indeed found the health workers were yet to arrive.

Cue out: …with such an operation.”//

Kasim Mukasa, who was seeking his first COVID-19 jab told URN that he reached the facility at 7:00 am but by 9:00 am he had not yet been guided on the procedures.

He asks the government to expand the vaccination exercise to designated public places like mosques and markets among others to give convenience to those seeking the jab.

Passy Muhindo, who was coming for his first jab before taking on his university studies reached the facility at 6:00 am with the hope that he will be among the first people to get vaccinated.

However, by 9:00 am, Muhindo said he was yet to get his jab and blamed the delay on the absence of health workers.

Hosea Nehemiah Kule, said that he arrived at 6:45 am and had to be patient until around 8:45 am when the RDC arrived forcing the health workers to begin operations.

//Cue in: “I came here...

Cue out: …doctors came.”//

Jane Mbambu, says that the high turn up of people and delays could discourage others from taking the jab.

Mizamil Kisembo, a VHT from Nyakasanga west attached to Kilembe Hospital wants the government to extend the vaccination to lower health facilities and private facilities to ease access for residents.

//Cue in: “Nyowe mabire ninsaba…

Cue out: …tibakatungire service.”//

The facility in charge James Muliwabyo told URN that only six health workers were trained for the COVID-19 vaccination exercise. He, however, says that only four showed up on Thursday.

Muliwabyo says that the facility is overwhelmed by the big number of persons seeking vaccination since it’s in the middle of town.

//Cue in: “The only problem…

Cue out: …much to handle.”//

The RDC says he will step up monitoring to ensure all facilities in the district designated for COVID-19 vaccination comply with the guidelines to avoid wastage of the vaccines.

//Cue in: “From here am just…

Cue out: … up their shocks.”//

Kasese Municipal HCIII and Rukoki health Centre IV are the only designated facilities for COVID-19 vaccination in Kasese municipality with a population of over 200,000 people.
