Uganda Cranes first choice goalkeeper Dennis Onyango has said he is happy for a new challenge after signing with Bidvest Wits University on loan for one season this afternoon. The experienced shot stopper moved on loan from giant side Mamelodi Sundowns.

Onyango, who passed a medical yesterday, told Uganda Radio Network on phone from South Africa this afternoon that he is very happy to move to another club to try and get enough playing time which is good for his career.

The goalkeeper was part of the Sundowns team that was in Ghana last month for pre-season training.

Bidvest Wits University, who are also eyeing Ugandan defender Savio Kabugo, had wanted to sign Onyango on a permanent basis, but Sundowns rejected the deal.

In June Onyango said it would be difficult for Sundowns to keep five International goalkeepers on the bench. He said his move was to get more playing time.

The move for the Ugandan international was perhaps unavoidable after Sundowns signed Zambia’s first choice goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene in June from Free State Stars to bring the number of goalkeepers at the club to five.

The other goalkeepers registered for Sundowns before the arrival of Mweene include Thela Ngobeni, Wayne Sandilands and Glenn Verbauwhede. Sundowns had only extended Onyango’s contract over two months ago.
