Robert Agumywa, a fisherman at the lake, said that although the deceased sounded an alarm, it was impossible to save him as he was some distance away from the other fishermen.
A crocodile has mauled a 30-year-old man on Lake Edward in Kasese District. The deceased has been identified as Andres Mumbere, a resident of Rwenjubu Ward in Katwe-Kabatoro Town Council. It is alleged that on April 19th, Mumbere went fishing on Lake Edward when a crocodile suddenly emerged from the water and grabbed him.
Robert Agumywa, a fisherman at the lake, said that although the deceased sounded an alarm, it was impossible to save him as he was some distance away from the other fishermen. Rwenzori East Police Spokesperson, Nelson Tumushime, confirmed the incident, saying the police teamed up with local fishermen to retrieve Mumbere’s body.
He noted that several body parts, including his arms and legs, were missing. “The fishermen at the lake have been advised to avoid fishing in crocodile breeding zones along the shores of Lake Edward,” Tumushime said.
He added that the police marine unit will continue patrols on the lake to deter illegal fishing. In October last year, a similar incident occurred when a crocodile killed 28-year-old Kule Felex Gaddafi, also from the same area, while he was out fishing.
