Two people were injured on Tuesday  and goods worth over 30 million shillings destroyed when a trailer belonging to Crown Beverages overturned near Hoima town.

The truck registration number UAB209K was transporting over 2000 crates of soda to Hoima town when it veered off the road and overturned.

The accident occurred at around mid day at Butanjwa trading centre, about 3 kilometers away from Hoima town on the Hoima-Kampala road.

Tom Odyek a traffic officer at the scene said the accident occurred when the trailer’s engine abruptly stopped causing the steering wheel to jam. Odyek blames it on a mechanical fault since the vehicle was at a very low speed, quoting witnesses and the turn man.

Although the turn man and the driver who were on board survived with minor injuries, the traffic officer describes the vehicle damage as immense.

Patrick Mwambala, the turn boy says at Butanjwa trading centre the driver informed him of how the vehicle engine had abruptly stopped and he could neither stop nor turn it.

A few moments later the vehicle veered off the road and overturned.

The driver only identified as Muko ran away after the accident.

Majid Nyoramo, an eye witness says he was surprised to see the vehicle veer off the road given the low speed at which it was being driven.

By press time broken bottles littered the whole scene as anti-riot police took guard to prevent looting.

Hussein Atugonza, the Crown Beverages area field supervisor Hoima says at the time police was called in several crates had been looted by residents.

Four crates of soda were recovered hidden in the nearby homes and others from the bush. Atugonza says the company has lost over 30 million shillings in the accident.
