The
nomination exercise for the residual and by-elections in Rakai District was on
Monday delayed due to lack of a stamp. By 4 pm, the exercise was yet to
commence, raising concerns from the aspirants.
Sylvia Tegyeza, the Rakai District Registrar, said
that the aspirants were ready with their nomination forms, but were yet to be
stamped by Chief Magistrate Patrick Kityo who was not in the office.
The
by-election will be conducted for the Kifamba Male Youth Councilor position
which fell vacant following the death of Augustine Jaggwe of National Unity Platform-NUP
who died in a car accident. The other position is for the Female Elderly
Representative for Lwentulege Town council, PWD which is vacant following the
death of Regina Nambooze.
For
Lwentulege and Lwamaggwa Town Council, the two positions were not contested due to a lack of candidates.
According to
the Kifamba Male Youth Councilor aspirants, Alex Kiweewa of the National Resistance
Movement-NRM party, Sharif Ssaku of the National Unity Platform-NUP, and Yosam
Ssuuna (independent) say that they were at the office of the Chief Magistrate
at 10:00 am, but by 4 pm, he had not yet arrived.

Ssemanda, the Rakai NRM Secretary, says that they had prepared their
aspirants for the nomination, but are disappointed by the delays.
The
Electoral Commission set November 29 and 30 as nomination days for the local
government residual election and by-elections. The elections will be conducted
on December 16.
