Joseph Matsiko, the Director of Civil Litigation has resigned from his job.
Matsiko tells Uganda Radio Network he made the decision to resign from the post he has held since September 2003 for medical and personal reasons. He does not elaborate what the medical and personal reasons entail.
Matsiko was appointed acting Director of Civil Litigation after the former director, Deus Byamugisha, was interdicted for abuse of office and causing financial loss to Government.
On April 19th Matsiko sent a letter to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service informing him of his resignation. He said he is nursing a health condition that can be aggravated by stress.
Matsiko explained that the workload at the directorate is quite heavy, subjecting him to high levels of work-related stress. He said his doctors advised him to leave work and go into private practice where he can relax more easily.
The Permanent Secretary has not yet responded to Matsiko's resignation which takes effect from July 1st.
Among the successful high-profile cases Matsiko has handled since his appointment is the dismissal of a 8.2 billion-shilling claims by Kampala University from Uganda Revenue Authority. He also led the recovery of 16 billion shillings by Uganda government from building contractors of the Jinja
