Security chiefs in Mbale have resolved to refer the disputed
results from the Mbale City Woman MP primary elections to the National Resistance Movement-NRM party Electoral
Commission headquarters in Kampala for investigations.
The decision
was reached after the leading contenders the incumbent Mbale District Woman Member
of Parliament, Connie Nakayenze Ggaliwango and Lydia Wanyoto clashed on the
tallying of votes from Lwaso, Namabasa and Bukonde Sub counties.
Nakayenze’s camp contested the results from the three sub
counties, saying they had overly been inflated to favor Wanyoto. She also
accused Wanyoto’s team of tampering with some declaration forms and altering
the originals tally.
On Saturday, both candidates and their supporters pitched
camp outside the Regional administrative block along Republic street where the
the party leadership was expected to announce the final results in vain.
Skirmishes broke out between the members of the rival camps
prompting police to use teargas to disperse them.
As a result of the tension, the
Mbale Resident District Commissioner, Suleiman Barasa Ogajo convened a closed
door meeting involving the candidates, Distinct Police Commander, Internal
Security Officer, Regional Police Commander, the 3rd Division Commander,
Brigadier General, Joseph Balikudembe and the NRM electoral commission
officials to end the stalemate.
Ogajo told journalists shortly after that they had resolved
to refer the issue of the contested results to the party headquarters as
advised by the Party Electoral Commission.

onward transmission to Kampala for verification.

Nakayenze welcomed the decision to refer the matter to Kampala, saying she is
confident the truth will finally come out.

Lydia Wanyoto declined to comment on the matter, saying they would comment later
today.
