Dozens Robbed in Mutukula Highway Attack

The incident occurred at around 1.a.m. at Kagezi trading centre, about 12 kilometres South of Masaka Town. Victims of the attack told Uganda Raio Network that about six people dressed in camouflaged uniform stopped vehicles at the illegally erected roadblock and ordered passengers to surrender all their belongings.

Police are hunting for a group of armed thugs who staged an illegal roadblock along Masaka-Mutukula Highway in the morning and robbed passengers of property worth millions of Shillings and cash.

The incident occurred at around 1.a.m. at Kagezi trading centre, about 12 kilometres South of Masaka Town. Victims of the attack told Uganda Raio Network that about six people dressed in camouflaged uniform stopped vehicles at the illegally erected roadblock and ordered passengers to surrender all their belongings.

John Kasinga, one of the victims says one of the robbers ordered them to surrender all their possessions or be shot and killed. He says he lost a phone and 100,000 Shillings. Several passengers lost laptops, clothing, and one who lost a fridge during the attack.

The swoop that lasted about 10 minutes, netted at least 18 vehicles, according to eyewitnesses.

Greater Masaka Region Police Spokesperson Lameck Kigozi says the thugs had disappeared by the time police arrived at the scene.

Latiff Zaake, the Southern Region Police commander says thugs are now taking advantage of the festive season to commit criminalities.  The police have since intensified patrols along all roads to ensure peaceful transport during the festive season.

In a related incident, unknown thugs have shot and injured a businessman in Lwengo. Twaha Sseruwoza, a trader in Kinoni town along Masaka-Mbarara highway is fighting for his life at Kitovu Hospital after armed thugs shot him in the chest at Kinoni.

He says he was driving to his home when two men on a motorcycle followed him and eventually shot him before he abandoned the vehicle into a nearby bush.
