A section of Democratic Party (DP) members in Bukomansimbi district are planning to elect their own party chairman because they say the newly appointed party chairman is too old.

On Tuesday, Bukomansimbi DP leaders appointed 87 year old Joseph Ssekibaala, the new Bukomansimbi DP Chairperson. Ssekibaala replaces MP Deogratius Kiyingi, the incumbent Bukomansimbi County MP who was the party chairman.

Ssekibaala\'s appointment was a compromise after a bitter battle between district woman MP Susan Namaganda and Kiyingi for the same seat.

Sulaiman Kidandala, the KCCA councillor who presided over the election says DP elders convened a crisis meeting and resolved that both MPs step down from the race for the DP chair.

He says as result DP elders decided to appoint Ssekibaala, who is seen as neutral. The district DP chairman\'s tenure is five years.

However, the decision to appoint Ssekibaala DP party chairperson has annoyed some DP delegates in Bukomansimbi.

The delegates say the appointment of Ssekibaala is null and void because they were not part of the process.

Tony Mayanja, a DP delegate from Kabigi parish says they are 36 members who are supposed to take part in the election of Bukomansimbi district DP executive.

He however says only five delegates of the 36 convened and appointed Ssekibaala.

Mayanja says this is null and void because it contradicts with the Democratic Party principles.

Another DP member Jude Musoke claims Ssekibala is too old to effectively mobilise support for the party.

Musoke says that by the time Ssekibala retired from active politics in 2010, he was already ill and this affected the party.

He also accuses Ssekibaala of creating cliques in the party when he was still party leader in 1990s which cost DP dearly.

According to Musoke, it was during Ssekibaala\'s reign as DP chairman that Iddi Kisiki Lubyayi won the Bukomansimbi seat.

However, Joseph Ssekibaala says he did not seek the position and was entrusted. He says he is still energetic and ready to work for the unity of the party.
