Norbert Mao, the president of the Democratic Party will on Friday this week pick nomination forms for the joint opposition presidential candidate in The Democratic Alliance – TDA.

Last week, The Democratic Alliance opened the nomination window for all joint aspirants for elective positions ahead of the 2016 general elections from the position of the president to village chairpersons.

While addressing the press Tuesday at the party headquarters at City House in Kampala, Kenneth Paul Kakande, the party spokesperson says the DP will fully rally behind Mao in the race.

Kakande adds that the party is now soliciting for the endorsement of signatory political parties in the TDA protocol. For any candidate to be fully nominated in the TDA for flag bearer, they need signatures from five political parties that constitute the protocol.

Following the re-election of Norbert Mao as the party president, the party constitution confers upon him the honour of representing the party as its flag bearer in the 2016 elections.

This happens amidst the leadership wrangles between Erias Lukwago and his supporters against Norbert Mao\'s leadership of the party.

Recently, the alliance denied receiving an application from Erias Lukwago and his Truth and Justice Platform to join the protocol.

Livingstone Okello Okello the chairperson of the candidate selection committee last week said that, the alliance will not allow Lukwago and his supporters as a splinter group of the Democratic Party – DP but as an independent.

Kakande however says Lukwago is free to run for the presidency if he has the interest, as long as he does not go in as a DP member or a splinter group of the party.

The deadline for the return of  nominations forms by aspirants for the joint opposition presidential candidate is Saturday, September 5th, although sources inside the TDA revealed to Uganda Radio Network that the alliance is considering extending the deadline to give parties an opportunity to organise legitimate elections of flag bearers.
