Dufile Residents Petition Parliament over Rampaging Wild Animals

They suggest, for example, that government considers increasing the number of Uganda People\'s Defence Forces (UPDF) troops in the area. They also want the government of Uganda to cooperate with that of South Sudan to enable the wildlife staff and other security agencies of both countries to cub the problem of insecurity caused by wildlife animals in the area.

People of Dufile Sub County, in the parishes of Lebuba Chinyi, Dufile and Arra in Moyo district have petitioned Parliament to get government to help them with wild animals that have made life difficult for them.

 

The petitioners noted that the animals have destroyed crops, caused insecurity, and destroyed human and domestic lives.

 

The petition goes on to blame low productivity in the region on the destruction wrought by these animals to the water transport system, fishing and other economic activities.

 

The animals listed as most destructive include Elephants, Hippopotamus and Crocodiles.

 

The petition was filed by Alero Tom Aza who represents West Moyo Constituency.

 

In the petition, they ask government to devise means of dealing with the menace posed by these wild animals.

 

They suggest, for example, that government considers increasing the number of Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) troops in the area.

 

They also want the government of Uganda to cooperate with that of South Sudan to enable the wildlife staff and other security agencies of both countries to cub the problem of insecurity caused by wildlife animals in the area.

 

The petition urges the government to declare Dufile a disaster zone. This is to enable humanitarian agencies supply relief items to the residents to boost the low productivity in the area brought about by the destruction caused by the wild animals

The petitioners asked for expeditious and speedy action on the petition.

 

Speaker Kadaga referred the petition to the Committee on Tourism. She directed that a copy of the petition be sent to the Tourism Minister for adoption of some of the prayers in it so that it can be handled immediately.
