Karamoja NUP Supporters Demand IGP's Resignation Over Kyagulanyi Arrest

NUP supporters in Karamoja called for the resignation of the IGP following Kyagulanyi's arrest moments after he was nominated to contest for the presidency, on Tuesday. He is one of the 11 candidates nominated by the Electoral Commission to faceoff with the incumbent Yoweri Museveni.

Demands for the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police after the violent arrest of presidential Candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, are farfetched, police spokesperson Fred Enanga has said.

NUP supporters in Karamoja called for the resignation of the IGP following Kyagulanyi's arrest moments after he was nominated to contest for the presidency, on Tuesday. He is one of the 11 candidates nominated by the Electoral Commission to faceoff with the incumbent Yoweri Museveni.

The same supporters also referred to the arrest of Forum for Democratic Change candidate Patrick Amuriat Oboi who was picked up from the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi and driven to the nomination centre in Kyambogo. They expressed dismay at how the police manhandled and bundled Bobi Wine and his team.

Andrew Lokong, the Moroto NUP Coordinator said that the Inspector General of Police should for failing to call the force into order. Lokong accuses the police of using excessive powers to curtail multiparty democracy on the orders of senior officials in government to the advantage of the incumbent, President Museveni.

The Karamoja regional NUP Coordinator Vincent Okot said police brutality was being used as a tool to oppress opposition political parties from soliciting support.

But Enanga explains that the two presidential candidates were defiant despite clear regulations set by the Electoral Commission regarding processions in the face of COVID-19 pandemic. He added that Kyagulanyi defied lawful directives to return to his home without attracting crowds.
