Eight senior employees of Bishop Barham University College Kabale-a constituent College of Uganda Christian University Mukono have resigned citing poor working conditions.

They are Godwin Kiiza, the Dean of Students, Gift Ayebazibwe, Accountant, Sadress Twinomugisha, Librarian, Duncan Akampurira, the head of the Library Department and his ICT counterpart, Patrick Mwesigye.

Others are Gilbert Arinaitwe, a lecturer, Ruthrah Nahweera, an administrative assistant and Driver, Jackson Kamanzi Bugyingo. The workers explain that they were forced to resign because of the poor policies of the principal of Bishop Barham University College Kabale, Rev. Dr. Medard Rugyendo.

He replaced Professor Emmanuel Muranga who retired in August this year. They also accuse the administration of scrapping exam and transport allowances without any consultations. According to the workers, they were entitled to a monthly transport allowance of Shillings 20,000, Shillings 5000 for invigilation and One Shillings for marking each paper. However, they were scrapped without any notification or prior consultation.

Some of the workers also accuse the University of failing to renew their contracts, which expired in June. Ruthrah Nahweera, the former administrative assistant, says her contract expired in June and has been working without any. She wonders why the administration opted to renew the contracts of the University secretary, Mary Dutch, Rev.Damson Akangwannirira and Canon Jackson Turyagyenda yet they are past their retirement age.

Gilbert Arinaitwe, a lecturer says he was forced to resign because he couldn't stand the abusive language of the principal. However, Reverend Dr. Medard Rugyendo, the Principal Bishop Barham University College Kabale dismisses the claims by the workers, saying they resigned after securing better jobs elsewhere.

He also denies claims of using abusive language, saying some of the workers are uncomfortable with the implementation of the new policies. Dr. Rugyendo, also defends the renewal of the contracts of some the employees who are past their retirements age, saying they are essential to the University given their experience.

On scrapping allowances, Dr. Medard Rugyendo says there is no way the workers could continue benefiting from exam and transport allowances yet they are paid a monthly salary.
