Rukiga Police are holding eight worshipers accused of staging an illegal assembly and operating an illegal church.

They are Christine Arinda, Apofia Tumusiime, Hope Nyamurungi, Annah Mugabirwe, Moreen Nyangoma and Angellah Nyangoma, residents of Kitojo, Nyarurambi parishes and Kangondo ward.

The suspects were picked up on Monday night from the home of Addah Kahababo, a resident of Kangondo ward in Rukiga Town council where they were holding prayers under the leadership of Pastor Aggrey Elias Mubangizi, a resident of Kafunda ward in Ibanda town council.

The Rukiga District Police Commander, John Mwaule, says the arrest of the suspects stemmed from complaints from their husbands that they had abandoned their children at home.

He cited the example of Annah Mugabirwe, who he said has spent about three months without returning home yet she has two children who need her attention.

According to Mwaule, Pastor Aggrey Elias Mubangizi has been the only man in the church.

On January 04th 2018, the outgoing Rukiga Resident District Commissioner, Emmy Ngabirano suspended the operations of the said church citing lack of the necessary facilities.

But the worshipers resisted the order.
