Top badminton player, Edwin Ekiring has been placed on the waiting list for qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games.
“Yes Ekiring is on the waiting list and we are waiting for the International Olympic Committee to make decisions on certain players for special consideration under the tripartite system,†Uganda Badminton Association Chief Executive Officer, Simon Mugabi told URN on Friday.
In the final list of 38 men's singles players released on Thursday by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Ekiring failed to make it after finishing 85th in the world rankings and second in the African continent.
South Africa's Jacob Maliekal qualifies as the continent's top player and 78th in the world ranking. “It is disappointing that Ekiring failed to make direct qualification after leading in Africa's top ranking for almost the whole year,†said coach William Kabindi.
In the women's category Kate Foo Kune from Mauritius also has qualified to represent Africa at the Olympics as she finished 66th as per the latest rankings. Ekiring participated in the Beijing and London Olympics where he lost out in the first round.
Uganda has only qualified eleven athletes and two boxers for the Summer Olympic Games that run August 7-21 in Rio de Jeneiro.
