Ekiring Ranked Second For Uganda International Open

According to the draws made by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the Holland based player will face a Kenyan player in the first round. “I am training seriously in Switzerland ahead of the Uganda International Open,” Ekiring told URN on phone.

Ekiring who missed the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil said he is eager to start the season with some good results. Georges Julien Paul from Mauritius will be the top ranked player for the men's singles, while Egypt's Hadia Hosny fo the women's category.

The pair of Francis Alwin and Kona Tarun from India are the top seeds for the men's doubles event. “Having players from India is good for the tournament because they bring a different style of play to the competition,” said Chief Executive of the Uganda Badminton Association, Simon Mugabi.

The Ugandan event sanctioned by the world body as an International Series with a cash prize of over UGX38 million will also see 28 other foreign players take part.

Last year's winners Niluka Karunaratne from Sri Lanka and Telma Santos (Portugal) who won the men's and women's titles respectively will miss the event. But tough competition will be expected from Georges Julien Paul, Aatish Lubah (Mauritius), Rudolf Dellenback (Italy), Ahmed Salah (Egypt), Bahaedeen Ahmad Alshannik (Jordan) and Ekiring for the men's singles.

The other countries sending players for the first BWF sanctioned tournament to be stages in Africa this year include; Kenya, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
