Uganda's top player Edwin Ekiring on Friday defeated Australia's Hsuan-yu Wendy Chen 2-1 in the second Group C match at the on-going 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Although Ekiring won his singles game 23-21, 19-21, 21-10 in 65 minutes, Uganda still went on to suffer a 4-1 defeat to the hosts.

“ I am happy that after losing my singles game to England on Thursday I fought back strongly to register a win today,” Ekiring told URN. The game which had the longest rally lasting 72 seconds also had the players use 17 shuttles.

In the women's singles Bridget Shamim Bangi lost 21-5, 21-12 to Hi Suan-Yu Wendy Chen. Bangi was again on the losing side when she paired with Aisha Nakiyemba in the women's doubles that they lost 21-7, 21-5 to Leanne Choo and Renuya Veeran.

Youngster Brian Kasirye paired with Nakiyemba in the mixed doubles losing 21-13, 21-15 to Ross Smith and Leanne Choo.  In the men's doubles Robin Middleton and Ross Smith stopped Ekiring and Kasirye 21-12, 21-6.

After England's 5-0 win over South Africa later in the day, Uganda are now third in Group C. Ekiring will lead the team against South Africa in their last group game.

In the other games played on Friday Canada humbled Ghana 5-0, while Malaysia defeated Seychelles 5-0 in Group D matches all played at the Carrara Sports Arena.

Group A: India, Scotland, Pakistan, Sri Lanka

Group B: Singapore, Mauritius, Zambia, Jamaica

Group C: England, Australia, South Africa, Uganda

Group D: Malaysia, Canada, Seychelles, Ghana
