Ekiring To Face Germany's Persson In Uganda Open

Former African top player Edwin Ekiring will face battle Germany's Jonathan Persson in the first round of the 2018 Uganda International Badminton Open Championship on Thursday at the Lugogo Arena.

Ekiring who was expected to arrive in the country on Monday afternoon aboard an Emirates flight has not been ranked in the tournament which runs February 22-25th.

Last year Ekiring who has represented Uganda at three Olympic Games got injured in the final and failed to continue against Georges Juliean Paul of Mauritius.

Fresh from winning the All Africa Senior Championship title in Algeria last weekend, Julien Paul will take Uganda's Herbert Ebayo in the first round, while fast rising Brian Kasirye will face an equally tough test against India's Harshit Aggarwal in the first round.

The Championship sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) will have players featuring in the men's and women's singles and doubles together with the mixed doubles.

In the women's singles Uganda's Bridget Shamim Bangi who won the title last year win face stiff challenge from Africa's top ranked player Kate Foo Kune (Mauritius) and Egypt's Hosny Hadia among others.

Simon Mugabi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) told URN that the Championship will attract players from Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, Algeria, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, India, Syria, Germany, France, Turkey, Zambia and the Republic Republic of Maldives among others.
