Elderly Man Dies In Kabale House Fire

One person has died and two others seriously injured in a suspected arson attack in Nyakatojo II cell, Nyakashebeya Parish, Kashambya sub county in Kabale District.
One person has died and two others seriously injured in a suspected arson attack in Nyakatojo II cell, Nyakashebeya Parish, Kashambya sub county in Kabale District.

  

The deceased has been identified as David Nyangyi aged 70 years, while the injured include; Lillian Tumwebaze, 44, the deceased's wife and a five year old child.

  

The attack took place at around 02:00am on Sunday when the deceased and the injured were sleeping.

  

James Kagina, a resident of the area says neighbours were awakened by screams and alarms made by the family members. Kagina says that by the time they arrived, fire had already engulfed the whole house.

  

Kagina adds that Tumwebaze and the child whose name was not readily available, managed to escape through the window. He suspects arson saying the doors of the house were locked from outside.

  

Kagina says that immediately after the incident, they rushed mother and a child to Kisiizi Hospital in Rukungiri District. He adds that this is the first incident of this kind to happen in the area.

  

Tumwebaze says that she and child sustained burns while passing through the window but that Nyangyi was not lucky. She says he failed to climb through the window because of his physical disability.

  

She adds that by the time of the incident, their three other children had gone for a party in Ngoma, also in Kashambya sub county.

  

The police spokesperson for Kigezi Region, Elly Maate says that has already visited at the scene to carryout postmortem. Maate also says has kicked off the investigations.

  

He also urges the public to help police with any information concerning g the incident.
