Electoral Commission has petitioned the Deputy Speaker, Jacob Oulanya to support its push for a staff pay rise. Recently, the Budget Committee of parliament endorsed a proposal to give Electoral Commission staff a pay rise.
Once approved, the increase will push the EC wage bill from Shillings 8 billion to 41 billion. Although Finance, Planning and Economics Development Minister, Matia Kasaija supports the move, he says there is no money.
This morning, the EC Chairperson, Simon Byabakama and his team met the Deputy Speaker to make a case for the pay rise, saying this will boost their independence and improve efficiency.

According to Byamukama, the salaries of EC staff haven't increased for over a decade, which has forced several talented people to quit and look for better paying jobs.
He also argued that for EC staff to work efficiently, they need to be paid well, saying some politicians have lots of money and can easily compromise the staff. In his response, the Deputy Speaker, Jacob Oulanya said it is unfortunate that the Electoral Commission has to lobby for a pay rise.

Once approved, the EC Chairperson will pocket Shillings 21.1 million each month compared to the Shillings 8.4 million he currently earns while his deputy will pocket 20.3 million and each Commissioners Shillings 20.3 million up from Shillings 8million.
The EC Secretary will get Shillings 15.4 million up from Shillings 5.1m, directors Shillings 12 million from Shillings 4.1M and departmental heads Shillings 10 million up from Shillings 2.1million. The least paid employee will get Shillings 1.7M up from Shillings 355, 764.
