Two wetland encroachers in Masindi district have been forced to restore the degraded wetland.

Alex Tabu and Charles Dama all residents of Kirasa cell in Masindi central division were on Monday arrested together with John Kiiza who had hired them to cultivate the wetland located along Masindi-Kafo road.

The two pleaded guilty and were released on police bond after signing an agreement that they would restore the wetland they had degraded.

On Friday the two men were found replacing the papyrus plants in the one-acre piece of the degraded wetland under the supervision of the District Environment Officer, Olivia Nabukenya.

Nabukenya said the activity is part of government's efforts of preserving environment from degradation.

She expressed optimism that the wetland will regenerate since the restoration is being done under technical supervision.

Nabukenya warned the public in the district against degrading wetlands. She says that the operation against wetland encroachers is continuing across the entire district adding that all crops planted in the wetlands will be destroyed.
