Uganda's Badminton team started with a 5-0 loss to England in a Group C match played at the Carrara Sports Arena on Thursday at the on-going 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia.
The pair of 17-year old Brian Kasirye and Aisha Nakiyemba appearing in the Games for the first time lost the opening match 21-5, 21-9 to the pair of Chris Adcock and Gabrielle Adcock.
Former Africa top player Edwin Ekiring who is playing in his last Commonwealth Games before he retires from representing Uganda later suffered a 21-11, 21-15 defeat to Rajiv Ouseph. Interestingly Ekiring will face Ouseph again in the second round of the men's singles if he he stops South Africa's Cameroon Coetzer on April 10th.
Uganda's top female player Bridget Shamim Bangi also failed to find the trick to defeat Chloe Birch who won 21-12, 21-10. Later the pair of Kasirye/Ekiring and Bangi/Nakiyemba also suffered defeats.
In the other Group C match played hosts Australia humbled South Africa 5-0. On Friday Uganda will battle Australia, while England take on South Africa.
