Thugs Break Into EU, GIZ Coordination Office In Gulu

Through PRUDEV, the European Union EU and GIZ aim at improving economic development in Northern Uganda with a strong focus on market integration through improving skills of agricultural producers and processors.
Gulu police are conducting forensic investigations into the break-in into the coordination offices of German International Cooperation (GIZ) in Gulu Town.

 

The offices are located in GUSCO Building inside a perimeter wall fence in Iriaga West Village in Iriaga Parish in Laroo Division, about 1 Kilometers along Gulu - Kitgum Highway.

 

The GIZ Office was opened in June last year. They house the Program for Promotion of Climate Smart Agriculture in Northern Uganda and the Civil Society in Uganda Support Programme - CUSP as well as the Promoting Rural Development in Northern Uganda Programme - PRUDEV.

The offices were being protected by two private guards attached to Security Group Africa (SGA). They were both injured and six vehicles damaged during the attack on Sunday.

 

One of the guards identified as David Ayela suffered injuries on both legs while his colleague, Francis Odongo was injured on the head. They were rushed for treatment at Victory Clinic in Gulu Town. 

Preliminary Police findings indicate that the attack was perpetrated by unknown assailants numbering eight people. Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa River Police Spokesperson, says the assailants roughed up both two guards before they broke into offices and vehicles at about 2Am. 

Okema says the attackers tied the two guards using sisal ropes before they assaulted them. The assailants also vandalized six vehicles including a Nisan Patrol UBB 005Q, Toyota Hilux UBB 683Y, Toyota Land Cruiser UBB 063H, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado UBB 682Y, Toyota double Cabin Pick UP UAZ 703Z and Nissan Patrol UBB 711K.

 

They also broke into money safes from, which they took; unspecified amount of money. Police Forensic experts have cordoned off the offices to investigate the incident under SD Ref: 16/27/1/2019 at Gulu Central Police Station.
