Eunice Kansiime Withdraws from Bushenyi Woman MP Race

She, however, said that the decision was not a result of family pressure, but an afterthought based on the advice of the senior leaders of the National Resistance Movement. Eunice Tworekirwe Kansiime has withdrawn her candidature from the Bushenyi District Woman MP race. Kansiime came to the limelight when a document purported to be from her husbands family circulated on social media, threatening against using her husband's name during campaigns.

She, however, said that the decision was not a result of family pressure, but an afterthought based on the advice of the senior leaders of the National Resistance Movement. Kansiime had been nominated as an independent candidate after withdrawing from the NRM primaries that were eventually won by Annet Katusiime Mugisha.

“l was approached by the senior leadership of the NRM party who requested that l consider withdrawing my candidature since I am equally an NRM supporter who firmly believes in its ideology of socio-economic transformation, patriotism, democracy and Pan-Africanism,” reads part of the statement.

Tworekirwe adds that although the decision was tough, it was the only option for her in order not to fuel intrigue and disunity in the NRM. "I'm not bigger than the Party. As a country, we are now under the multiparty dispensation and there is therefore little political space for independent candidates,” she adds.

Last month, a letter is purportedly written and signed by the Chairperson of the Bashaasha Foundation, Willis Bashaasha was all over social media asking Tworekirwe from contesting as woman MP Bushenyi district on grounds that she lacked consent from the Family.

The same letter was asking her to stop using their son’s name Kansiime. But a day later,  through Nambale, Nerima & Co. Advocates & Legal Consultants, the Bashaasha foundation released a statement dismissing the letter as fake, written to tarnish the image of the family.

Tworekirwe becomes the second candidate in Bushenyi district to withdraw from the parliamentary race after Dr Nicholas Karuhanga who withdrew from the Igara West race. The race now remains between Annet Katusiime Mugisha of the NRM party, Madina Lukwago (Independent), and Federica Nshemereirwe (FDC).
